Taking the mystery, complexity out of the work permit process

Work permits are a “must” for any traveller, labourer, or student to visit, work, or complete a course of study within our country. Due to our familiarity with the complexities, opportunities, and challenges of the Canadian immigration process, we are well aware of the options for residency. As it relates specifically to the work permit programs, we may determine that you or a talented asset abroad are a great candidate for the following: 

  • Openwork – These work permits are for candidates who are not eligible under the Labour Market Impact Assessment requirements. LMIAs establish that a worker has in-demand skillsets or represents skills that are in short supply within the market, based on a needs assessment. There are both unrestricted and restricted permits, which may apply to a spouse or common-law partners of skilled foreign workers or students. 
  • Post-graduate – Relatively self-explanatory, these permits are designed for students who have graduated from accredited learning institutions and are valid for three years. 
  • IT workers – If you or your firm are in the Information Technology realm, great news! There are many potential avenues for your skilled professionals as the field grows rapidly within our country. There are options for those with at least five years of advanced industry expertise and intra-company transfers, which allow businesses to bring their qualified global employees to Canadian branches or locations, among other avenues for permits. 

There are additional options for professionals who have applied for residency through a range of other programs, including the Provincial Nominee Program. Also, there are some notable exceptions to the otherwise non-negotiable work permit rule. Potential exemptions cover a range of unique situations and positions, including athletes or coaches, researchers, performing artists, and emergency service workers.
